Yes the Power Off Icon is gone from the BlackBerry PlayBook Home Screen

PlayBook power off icon

I really figured the power off icon being gone with the PlayBook OS update, would not cause any confusion, or that anyone actually used the icon at all. After many questions in our Forum and getting questions about it via Twitter I figured I would do a quick post about this.

Keep in mind that some people are getting the PlayBook for the first time today or tomorrow and if they see an old image while searching the net of the original power off icon shown here.  playbook_power_off_icon

I can see this causing a bit of confusion for those that always used it but I for one never really noticed the icon was even gone until someone asked me where it went. lol

I always use the battery icon in the header to control powering options for my PlayBook, but maybe I am the odd one who knows. Nerveless I hope this post helps a few people for powering off their BlackBerry PlayBook.

Before doing this post I did ask a RIM representative if the Power Icon would come back to the PlayBook in a future update and he did say “No” because that option is available via the battery icon at the top of the PlayBook.

So for those new or old PlayBook users, get used to powering off your Playbook using the battery icon at the top of the PlayBook.

  1. I only tapped the icon on the home screen.  Why tap twice when you only have to tap once.  But that is not the issue.

I shut off my Playbook every night.  It s plugged in and the battery power is 100%.  The backlight NEVER goes out.

It is dimmed but stays on (and will stay on all night).  When I unplug the Playbook, the light brightens for about 30 seconds then goes completely out

and stays out until it is powered back on.  I don’t think this happened when the Power Off was on the home screen.  I believe that

the “Power Off” program was changed, or for some reason, 2 different programs were executed for the 2 different “Power Off” options. Why would Blackberry

make the arbitrary decision to remove the icon on their first update shortly after 2.0 was introduced if not to stop people from executing a program  they

    wanted to get rid of?

  2. swipe down from top and double check your screen settings. Then go to General on the left and make sure application behavior is default and demo mode is off.

  3. Should have replied months ago. Tried what was suggested. No changes. When powered off, light will only go out when not plugged in. Certainly not a big deal, just strange. Thanks.
