Yes the Power Off Icon is gone from the BlackBerry PlayBook Home Screen

PlayBook power off icon

I really figured the power off icon being gone with the PlayBook OS update, would not cause any confusion, or that anyone actually used the icon at all. After many questions in our Forum and getting questions about it via Twitter I figured I would do a quick post about this.

Keep in mind that some people are getting the PlayBook for the first time today or tomorrow and if they see an old image while searching the net of the original power off icon shown here.  playbook_power_off_icon

I can see this causing a bit of confusion for those that always used it but I for one never really noticed the icon was even gone until someone asked me where it went. lol

I always use the battery icon in the header to control powering options for my PlayBook, but maybe I am the odd one who knows. Nerveless I hope this post helps a few people for powering off their BlackBerry PlayBook.

Before doing this post I did ask a RIM representative if the Power Icon would come back to the PlayBook in a future update and he did say “No” because that option is available via the battery icon at the top of the PlayBook.

So for those new or old PlayBook users, get used to powering off your Playbook using the battery icon at the top of the PlayBook.

RIM Retail Video Demo 2. Download the Video onto your PlayBook

blackberry playbook demo video app

One thing I hope this video does, is save me some time explaining the capabilities of the PlayBook when I am out and about. I honestly do enjoy talking about it, but making sure I hit all the high points, can be time consuming.  With this Retail Video Demo I can simply say here, watch this and I will come back to answer questions.

I am not sure how many end users will find this video being added to your videos folder useful, but it may just come in handy for you at some point.

This may sound odd, but the really cool thing I took from installing this video was how the installer put it in the video folder, and worked it into the demo mode. I see this as an executable from the PlayBook. ( I can see many future uses for bundles such as this)

After you follow the directions and the video is located in your video folder, you can delete the application icon on your home screen. (I did anyway lol)

Be sure to follow the directions and it will work perfectly.

This Avoca application provides a download service for RIM’s latest retail video. Once downloaded, please run the application and wait for the green bar to complete. Then, quit the application and navigate to the Videos Folder on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™.

The application will have downloaded the “RIM Retail Demo 2″ video that has been optimized for retail stores, showcasing all the great features the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ has to offer. The video is intentionally muted for non-disturbing playback in retail environments.

Retailers can enable Demo Mode within the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ settings, and the video will become part of the rolling on-screen videos.

Price Free

RIM Retail Video is Available for Download in BlackBerry App World Here.

How to Access your PlayBook via Your WiFi Network.

playbook wifi network

If you want to access your PlayBook via your WiFi network, swipe down from the top of your PlayBook and simply go to Storage and Sharing, turn on File Sharing and WiFi Sharing. You will be recommended to create a password, so this is up to you depending on how security is on your WiFi network. If your WiFi is open/public and you have close neighbors I would create one. When this is completed you can move on to the next steps.

While your PlayBook is connected to your WiFi, get your PlayBook and swipe down from the top and tap on WiFi on the left side of the screen.

You will now see at the bottom a WiFi icon with a question mark. Tap on it.

Now you are on the WiFi status screen and you want to open the drop down and select Internet Connection.

The first thing you see is the IP Address, and this is what you want to remember.

Now go to your computer to access your PlayBook on the WiFi network.

For Win. XP go to start then Run

Win. 7 or Vista go to start and type in the search box RUN and select the RUN command.

Inside the run box type in \\ then your ip address. with no spaces.

You should see the file folders on your PlayBook.

Right click on Media and create a shortcut on your desktop.

The first time you open you will need to put in the name and password you set up originally on the PlayBook Storage and Sharing option.

This is very handy to drag and drop media and other things between your PlayBook and PC.

Great BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 Video, Shows off Features and Diversity

Mobile Now? Watch Video Here.

I have seen a few commercials for the PlayBook so far, and when someone sent me the link to this video on Twitter, I quickly realized this is the best video to date that shows the power of the PlayBook. The video is around 3 minutes long, but really shows off the diversity of the PlayBook for personal and business use. I hope to see this video all over the TV soon.

Export Contacts from your Device, Microsoft Outlook and other Mail Clients to your PlayBook.

import contacts blackberry playbook

I have had many people asking about getting contacts from one place or another onto their PlayBook.  I helped a lot of them, but figured I would do a post on what I myself and others have done so I can point future questions to this post.

Lets start off with what you need to have to make this very simple, and that is a Gmail account that you are willing to put on your PlayBook. Everything else just falls into place.

With Microsoft Office, Thunderbird and other email clients, you have an option to export your address book as a CSV (comma separated value). So start off by getting your contacts exported and saved somewhere you can easily find.

Next go to your Google contacts page via the web Here  once you have a Gmail account. While on your contacts page take a look at your contacts and make sure you do not have any old ones that you want removed. While on your contacts page you will see on the left hand side the menu options and you want to select the last one import contacts. When you click on import contacts  a window opens up so you can browse to your CSV File you saved from your contacts export and simply select import.

Google contacts also supports importing vCard from apps like Apple Address Book.

Once you have imported I recommend going through your contacts on the Google contacts again and removing those that you may not want. If you already have this Gmail account loaded on your PlayBook, these new contacts will import when it syncs.

For your BlackBerry Device you can download  Google Sync app but in all honesty it can create a mess on your BlackBerry Device with duplicate contacts because it syncs both ways. I recommend using the free DropBox for BlackBerry app that allows you to export your contacts to the cloud in a vCard format. Don’t have a DropBox account get your 2GB free by signing up here.     Then download the DropBox for BlackBerry App Here. After DropBox for BlackBerry has been installed simply go to your contacts and hit the menu key and select export contacts to Dropbox.

Then go to dropbox copy and paste the vCard of your export and save it to your desktop. Then go to Google contacts and import the file.

I exported via dropbox on my device, Microsoft Outlook and Thunderbird then imported them all into my Google contacts. After the contacts finished syncing I have all showing up on my PlayBook now.

When you delete a contact via your Google contacts page or via your Contacts on your PlayBook, they will update each other.

Other ways may be available but this is how I went about it. Hope this helps some folks out.
