BlackBerry PlayBook to Run Android Apps?

By | January 27, 2011

Jason at  BGR says he's been told by multiple trusted sources that RIM is seriously considering a feature that will allow BlackBerry devices to run Android apps. If this could be possible with the QNX OS platform, which is already on the BlackBerry PlayBook; how would this happen exactly? BGR made this comment in his post.

We have been told RIM is very much considering the Dalvik virtual machine, and we ultimately expect the company to chose Dalvik. If that sounds familiar to you, it’s because it’s the same VM that the Android OS uses, and it would allow RIM’s PlayBook and other QNX devices to run just about any application built for the Android platform.

I will admit from a developers perspective this is over my head, but I do see and understand the additional possibilities this would bring to PlayBook users. Sure many legalities would figure into this, however if this technology path is chosen, and becomes a reality, RIM would broaden it's market for sure.

If you are a programmer/developer and can add some insight into this being possible or not, please leave a comment.
