@chall3ng3r let us know about a new tool that will be very handy for people developing for the BlackBerry PlayBook. PlayBook Icon maker is currently in beta version, but I used it for several icons and it worked like a champ.

Details: PlayBook Icon Maker allows you to quickly create professional quality icons for your BlackBerry PlayBook applications. This tool implements UI guidelines recommended by BlackBerry.

For BlackBerry PlayBook AIR and WebWorks SDKs, you are required to provide the application icon in PNG format in size of 86×86 pixels, having contents inside of 76×76 pixels area.

Icon Maker allows you to select a 76×76 pixels rectangle from any PNG, JPG or GIF image, and it automatically adds 5 pixels buffer around your selection when you click Create Icon button. Making it recommended 86×86 icon, perfect for your PlayBook applications.

Output icons are compatible with:

  • BlackBerry PlayBook – AIR Applications
  • BlackBerry PlayBook – WebWorks Applications
