Working SNES Emulator for the BlackBerry PlayBook available now

I grew up playing the SNES and I still enjoy playing a lot of the games. All of my PCs have an SNES emulator and a bunch of ROMS on them. I don’t know why, but that is usually one of the first things I put on a new PC.  So I was really excited to hear that A7omic and jtokarchuk have released a side-loadable bar file for their port of SNES9x for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This is great news for anyone that is a fan of emulators. Because we now have another option for getting our nostalgic gaming fix.

I’ve already loaded my entire collection of SNES ROMs to my PlayBook and I’ve spent some time trying out a lot of them. To be honest, I am very impressed with how well this emulator works. I’ve used PC emulators that wont run SNES games as well as SNES9x-pb will. The games run at full speed and the music and sounds work like they should. The controls do take a little bit of getting used to, but they work well. I am still able to perfect M. Bison on level 3 difficulty just as easily as I do using a normal SNES controller. So I am happy.

To use SNES9x-pb you will have to side-load it onto your PlayBook.  If you do not know how to side-load apps you can follow the guide here.  Just scroll down to the part that says “How to side-load apps“.

Once you have the app on your PlayBook you will need ROMs to play on it (Remember, only download ROMs for games that you currently own). When you run SNES9x-pb for the first time it will automatically create the following directory on your playbook:

/accounts/1000/shared/misc/snes9x-pb/

Inside of that directory you will find a folder named “rom”.  Simply drag and drop all of your .smc files into that rom folder and the next time you launch SNES9x-pb they will be ready to play. You can scroll through your ROMs using the little fast froward arrow at the bottom of the screen.

SNES9x-pb can be downloaded here

Groovy Notes for BlackBerry PlayBook – Note Taking Application by XLabz Technologies (Review)

groovy notes blackberry playbook

Groovy Notes is a note-taking application for the Blackberry Playbook that also includes a calendar with it so you can file your notes by date. You are also given categories to file your notes by, so the super organised people with feel right at home writing notes on this application!

Okay, so let’s begin with the layout and design of Groovy notes. Let me start by saying that it is by the best looking notes application in the market today with a brilliant two-tabbed display with your note titles on the left and your actual notes on the right. It is definitely easy to use and easy on the eyes too! On the right you have your tabs for different categories of the notes you want to take, these different categories are: All, Conversation, Diary, To Do & Travel. I also found out later on that you can add or delete categories too! There’s nothing different about any of the layouts depending on which category you are, but if you want to switch to a tab with all your notes about Travel details, then you know where to go. To the right of these tabs you have the titles of your notes in that category which obviously changes depending on which category you’re in. Then to the right of that you obviously have your actual note. You get a few options within your notes, one is to change the date for which the note was taken which I didn’t quite get the point of, but then someone told me that you might write a note that applies to a different date, such as someone’s birthday or a meeting. You can also record voice notes and play them back within this application which is nicely integrated into the actual Note. Other options in the application are to options to delete, add note, the option to search by the note’s tags and a calendar option. Now, you can’t interact with the camera to see which note is happening on the day that it’s said there’s a note, the only thing you can do with the calendar is switch through months.

You do have a little cog at the bottom of the application which controls your notes and what you can do is: expert notes, export ALL notes, backup notes, restore notes and synch notes. These settings suggest that there may be a cloud that integrates with this application, but I couldn’t find anywhere to sign in.

This application was very easy to use and I actually found myself using the different categories to add notes into different parts of my life. I took the “conversation” category to just mean general notes as I can’t see why they’d be as specific to add a note just for you to write down conversations that interested you or made you laugh!  It’s beautiful and everything works first time and it’s just in general a very nice application to use for applications. I am not 100% sure of the price point at this time but all-in-all, a brilliant application!

“Leave Me Alone” Game for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Fun Yet Challenging Arcade Style Game.

Leave Me Alone PlayBook Game in App World

When David let me know about his game Leave Me Alone I was a little skeptical when I saw the simplicty of the screen shots he sent, but now that I have played Leave Me Alone for the PlayBook, I am hooked.

Do not let the simple interface fool you, this game is fun yet challenging and I find myself going back to completed levels to see if I can try new ways to complete the level.

The thumb navigator took me about a minute to get the hang of, but overall the user interface works great. One tip to keep in mind, is when you start a level you better start moving instantly.

This game is classified as an arcade style game, but it does offer some puzzle elements also as you try and navigate levels and accomplish your goal.

Details: This is a game about those sad times when the world just won’t leave you alone. At times like this, all one can do is try to make the most of it.

27 levels of heart-pounding, brain-fortifying bullets bullets bullets bullets, presented in startlingly minimal 1-color pixel nuggets. 6 enemy types; 3 material types; lots of beauty and grace. Enjoy!
